Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior official stated the attack rendered him without words and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
