EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
