Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.

At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
