Roughly 35,000 people may be impacted, warns the United States embassy

A major information leak in the Somali electronic visa system may have exposed private data belonging to tens of thousands of travelers, involving American nationals, the United States diplomatic mission in Mogadishu has warned.

Officials stated had received trustworthy accounts that "unidentified hackers" had penetrated the Somali government's e-visa platform, likely endangering details concerning roughly 35,000 people.

The compromised files being shared on the internet include personal identifiers, photos, dates of birth, relationship status, place of residence and email information, according to a American diplomatic communication published on recently.

"This security incident remains active and might reveal all private information submitted to the application portal," the UK has additionally cautioned travellers.

"Consider the risks prior to requesting an electronic visa required for visiting the Federal Republic."

Government Response

Federal administration representatives have remained silent regarding the incident. But the government has transferred visa application system away from evisa.gov.so to etas.gov.so, without offering a formal statement.

"Even though Embassy Mogadishu lacks the capacity to validate if personal information belongs to the security incident, individuals who have applied through the electronic visa system might be compromised," the US' statement declared.

Geopolitical Impact

Somalia's new system mandates all travellers, including those from the self-declared republic of the northern territory and the partially independent area of the autonomous state, to apply for travel visas through digital means.

Critics say travellers have faced extra fees in certain regions, totaling double charges.

Regional Dynamics

The northern territory, which declared independence in the early nineties, governs itself through independent structures but has not been internationally recognised. The Federal Government maintains that this territory still constitutes its national domain.

The claimed security incident contributes to ongoing disputes involving central government and northern authorities over control of aviation space. Even though Mogadishu regained full control of national aviation space in the past decade, Somaliland persistently challenges the arrangement.

Current Developments

The conflict escalated further recently after Somaliland's President the Somaliland president stated Somaliland would reject Somalia's e-visa and directed that aviation companies are required to secure permission from northern authorities before entering its airspace.

Yet leading carriers have declined to process individuals lacking federal visa authorization.

On Saturday, the northern region's top diplomat the diplomatic representative again insisted that "every person entering the northern territory should receive travel authorization on arrival", saying Mogadishu's digital application process posed risks and alerting that "personal information could be accessed by extremist organizations" as a result of utilizing the system.

Travel Disruptions

The conflict has left some travellers destined for Hargeisa stranded at airports after being denied boarding due to absence of Mogadishu's digital permit.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, the transport official, has told media outlets that the directives - initially declared in recent months - came into effect on the tenth of November.

The minister stated carriers that refuse might be directed to reroute, and stated several aircraft had been forced to change paths.

Aviation Authority Dispute

Recorded material released by the northern region's air transport department seems to demonstrate regional aviation officials providing guidance to foreign aircraft commanders - a move celebrated domestically as a demonstration of northern self-governance.

Nevertheless Mogadishu's air transport department maintains it maintains complete jurisdictional power regarding the federal aviation control area (Flight Information Region), that includes the whole nation's airspace. Authorities have instructed all aircraft to pay no attention to any guidance provided by sources besides central government.

Officials cautioned that failing to comply with federal and global flight regulations could pose aviation dangers and lead to "major judicial outcomes".
